Gym Review: Xcon (Tiger City Boxing Gym)

"No Boundaries. No Limits." For the old and the new kids on the block, Tiger City's one of the underappreciated gyms will certainly take you by surprise.

How to get there - Xcon, more popularly known as Tiger City Boxing Gym, is located at 248 Sto. Rosario St. Plainview, Mandaluyong. Getting to the place is quite simple. From Manila, just coast through Boni Ave and right before you reach the circle (Maysilo Circle), turn right to Sto. Rosario. Head straight and on the corner, the gym should be at your sight. There's not a lot of establishments surrounding the area so before going there make sure you already had your breakfast (or lunch). Be advised as well that this exact area along Boni Ave is very prone to floods. Consider yourself warned.

 The Place

I went there at around 3 o'clock when the sun was shining at its brightest. I immediately sensed the nearby area was generally peaceful and quiet, it kind of reminds me of our home in the province. The atmosphere is unbelievably similar, it gives you the relaxing vibe.

From the outside, the place looked like a huge abandoned house that you inherited from your great grand mother. On the left hand side, don't be surprised if you see a mini tree-house. It's where some of the trainers sleep as most of them are "stay-in" coaches. But no, you won't see couples sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

In terms of parking, there's a decent space and I would estimate around 6 - 8 cars can fit in it. The inside would be a totally different story. Floor area is huge, there's an enormous space in the middle for the pad work. You can see ropes hanging on the poles on either side and a couple of stationary bikes if the space isn't enough to get you warmed up! There's a mini weight room, a medium-sized boxing ring and right beside it is another space for different work out routines. They also have a changing and shower room if you end up full of sweat (which you will).

Price and Promos

pardon my shaky hands. pic was taken after workout
Annual Membership: 1000
Standard price. Most of the gyms are at this price point.

Boxing: 300 (350 walk-in)
This amount is hovering at the higher end of my own market value range but still borderline standard. Take advantage of the 200/day special if you avail of the 12 sessions (monthly).  For hardcore boxing enthusiasts, go for the unlimited monthly special at 4000.

Strength and conditioning (functional) work out can also be availed at the same price. Bring your own gear as they don't have gloves or wraps for rent.

The Experience

The coaches available any day are 6 to 8, most are stay-in trainers. The trainer that was assigned to me looked like he just fought for a championship belt, he had a small wound on his face that appeared like it's on the second stage of healing. His physique was like mine (although his is way more muscular). He walked up to me with a device in his hands - a small timer. "Let's warm up", he said. To my surprise he actually did compete just a week ago - it was a 12-round championship fight. He told me that he had been defending his belt for quite some time and for him to be able to move up the rankings, he had to go up a weight class. WOW.

students getting their groove on

6 minutes of skipping ropes is done. Now he hands me this plastic pole to do some dynamic stretching exercises. That was a first for me! I never thought I was that stiff until I tried doing the pole exercises - it was an amazing experience indeed! I was then given a full round of rest.

Then we hit the mitts. The first round was like a "feeling out" process, he was looking carefully at my foot work and stance: he was watching how I threw my jab... everything. The next thing I knew, we were at the end of the 4th round and he yells, "Last two, brother." At that point my heart rate was faster than the cars in South Super Highway.  6 rounds ended and it left me hating everything in life for about a minute. I felt unstoppable!

the aqua punching bag
We rest for another round then headed to the bags. Now this was something incredible that I have never seen before in ANY gym - a hanging aqua bag. It's a round, tear-shaped punching bag that has water inside, covered by vinyl material. You would think that changing the inside of the punching bag from sand, ripped clothes, sheets, rags, cotton, wool, rice, feathers, styrofoam, shredded tires to WATER would make no difference and you would be absolutely wrong.

He told me to do 4 rounds of bag work with their aqua punching bag. Supervised the whole time, I thought this was going to be just another "walk in the bag". 30 seconds in, I was feeling the soreness on my shoulders every time I threw a punch. "This is very weird", I told myself. Furthermore, every attempt to throw a power punch does not make any remarkable impact on the bag. It only made my shoulders feel more heavy and sore, as if I were lifting weights.

Rest. Then he walked me to the speed ball station to do 3 rounds of speed ball training.
Rest. He then advised me that we are almost done. He grabbed a sledge hammer from the floor and pointed it to what seemed to be a spare tire of a 16-wheeler truck. Hammer & tire workout! It was yet another new advanced routine that I was able to add in my arsenal.

Value

The whole training session lasted for more than an hour but I stayed longer to try some of the different equipment they have. I also did rope climbing and some core workout using the dumbells. Now, let me give a quick recap through FYI's in this awesome experience.

the skinny guy working the rope :)
FYI#1 - It was my first time to do 6 rounds of mitts training STRAIGHT. Trainers in most boxing gyms will do a maximum of 3 continuous rounds with you. To be honest, I have no idea why we did 6 rounds. (Maybe he was fond of me?)
FYI#2- It was my first time to stretch with the long plastic pole.
FYI#3- It was my first time to workout using the aqua punching bag.
FYI#4- It was my first time to do the sledgehammer & tire exercise.

Not a lot of first time's, eh? Keep in mind that I was closely monitored by my trainer 100% of the time.

The Verdict

The price point may be on the higher end but given the quality of workout that I experienced all through out, I can easily say that this was a solid experience. Tiger City Boxing Gym is one of those diamonds in the rough. I would absolutely come back to this place (already did).

Gym Review: Elorde Plus - BF Homes

To all my brothers and sisters who hail from the south, let me hear you scream! All right. I'll let you in on a dirty little secret: This gym kicks ass! You'll find out why after reading this comprehensive review.

How to get there - the gym is located at Fitness & Beauty mall, 290 Aguirre Ave, BF Homes, Paranaque - just a few minutes away from Las Pinas, Alabang and NAIA terminal. If you're coming from Manila, I urge you to go via President's Ave. From there Aguirre Ave is just a few kilometers away. I wouldn't recommend using Google Maps/Waze to get there, we've gotten lost a couple of times doing so (you've been warned). Just follow the instructions above and you'll be fine. For those commuting, there are FX vans coming from Roxas Boulevard that you can take and drop off at BF Homes. From there you can take a tricycle to get to the gym.

Right across the building is Starbucks (take a pre-work out Espresso shot for energy maybe?) Along the street you'll also find fast food joints and some restaurants. Please don't visit them after working out as it'll defeat your purpose of going to the gym, okay? (But I'm not your mom so do as you please.) I got there at around night time and there's still quite a number of people, you can say it's a pretty busy street.

The Place -  the building has an assigned security personnel and a bunch of CCTV cameras inside and outside the building. Safety-wise? Check. For parking, there's a of bit space you can work around in front of the building. I would estimate around 8-10 cars can fit in it any time. Now what about the actual gym, you ask?  You know how I'm selective when it comes to the gym size.

Elorde Plus -BF Homes provides a decent amount of space for you to maneuver your body. Not to mention Elorde Plus is NOT just a boxing gym - they also offer Muay Thai, indoor cycling (they call it Spinning), Zumba classes and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) sessions! In the middle you'll see a boxing ring. On the side are a few heavy bags and a couple of speed balls. There's a separate space for lifting weights, a huge room where you can presumably conduct a dance class (although I'm pretty sure it's for doing different exercises like Yoga), and another room for spinning! Imagine you're inside your office building with function and meeting rooms, that's how it looks like. Pretty awesome I'd say.

the boxing session

When I entered the rest room, I seriously thought I was in a high-end condominium building. The tiles are brand new, oh and the shower sprinkle heads are twice as big as my head! Did I mention that the whole place was top-notch in terms of cleanliness? Here's the part that I can't get over with: the gym is fully air-conditioned! I was so used to boxing gyms that don't have AC's that I didn't know what to feel when I trained at this gym. Was I going to sweat a little bit? Will I even sweat at all?

Forgot to bring your gear? Worry no more as they have rentals for boxing gloves and wraps. (Bring your own underwear I beg of you). Water and refreshment can also be purchased at the counter.

Annual Membership: 1500
This price is within the prevailing market price for most gyms that offer full-contact sports training. This one is in the middle lower range, considering the location, size, not to mention the quality of service.

Boxing: 200
This is right around the market price for boxing. Market is price is around 150 - 300 per session. Get a sizable discount with 10 sessions.

Muay Thai: 300

The rule of thumb for pricing is Boxing fee + 100.

Indoor Cycling (Spinning): 300
This is dirt cheap compared to others. Market price is anywhere between 500 and 1000 per ride.

Gym Use: 1000/30 days or 33/day

This may not be Fitness First or Gold's Gym but the equipment they have will make do. No one goes to a boxing gym to be a body builder anyway.

The Experience

Here's the juiciest part - the actual training session! I opted for their Muay Thai training program (one session) just for the heck of it, I kid of course. I love the sport so much I can't let this gym not let me try it. I also haven't trained in a while so might as well loosen those hip joints, eh?

(I would image that boxing session wouldn't be any different in terms of the program except that there will be no kicking.)

Now there's usually around 10 coaches available at any time of day (6 for boxing and 4 for Muay Thai) according to my trainer. The coach that was assigned to me was a young, professional MMA fighter. He works in the gym in the morning and trains at night. Okay great, an active fighter will be training me. Horaaaay! Plus he seemed a pretty nice guy, until the training started.

a student doing Muay Thai pad work with the coach
We began at approximately 6:15 PM. Immediately, he tells me to run around the ring and do 4 sets of exercises in between. "Okay now that we're done with the warm up, let's stretch." WHAT, that was just warm up? It took about 7-10 mins to finish then I was given a full round (3 minutes) to rest. After which, he told me to hit the bags with knees and do a couple rounds of shadowing boxing. This guy ain't playing no games homie!

Rest. Then on the intense pad work. After the exhausting 3 minutes of your life you'd be asked to do 10 push ups (can you say no?). Now you would think that exercising in a fully air-conditioned room wouldn't make you sweat, and you would be wrong.

Rest. He then instructed me to do 2 rounds of kicking on the heavy bag (20 in each foot). Rest. Then another blood-sucking 2 rounds of pad work. Rest. 50 kicks to the pads and 1 minute of knees. (Are you still with me?) Rest. Then I was surprised at we did next. I have never seen this equipment in a very long time, he strapped a 5-pound ankle weight on my foot and I did a number of kicks after another while he's holding the pad. (It was a new exhilarating yet an awesome experience for me).

But wait, there's more...

After a seemingly endless work out, my trainer told me to lay down. I guess it was nap time? No, it was time for the ab work out. I thought great, almost done. The workout literally took all the gas in my tank, still he made me do 3 different ab exercises (no rest in between) with the last one involving him pounding a folded yoga mat on my stomach while doing crunches. He was a savage one that coach, then he gave me that half smile them hot boys give you to badly get your phone number (I'm talking to you girls here).

"Okay you go stretch to cool down and be ready for the massage." I couldn't believe it at first, then a masseuse walks towards me and the rest is history. After giving my earthly body the punishment of a lifetime they reward me with a world-class massage. I swear that massage was the real deal, I don't know what type of massage it was, it could have been Thai, Swedish or some Asian country-oriented massage. Needless to say, it was a very relaxing one. It took a minimum of 15 minutes (although I might have fallen asleep in the process, who knows?)

a student getting help stretching after the work out

Value

Time check: 8:15PM. After everything was said and done, my coach walked up to me and said, "You've got great cardio, I actually had to use the 'advanced' program as I sensed you have a higher level of fitness." This is not to brag but to point out how the trainer adjusted his approach depending on his student's current fitness level. It's worth noting that this is the first time I have been to this place. Now, ladies and gents, this is the kind of standard that you must look for when you go to any gym. You wouldn't want the same program that was laid out to hundreds of other students. Since this sport requires a one-on-one, coach-student type of teaching approach, the teacher has to have that ability of recognizing your skills and limits so he can tailor-fit his approach to your needs, whatever your fitness level maybe.

The Verdict

Considering everything, I would give this experience a /10. I would have given this a 10, had the gym been bigger. I'm used to training at gyms that have 2 boxing rings so I can play around like a five-year old but that's just me.

I hope you enjoyed the review and I wish that I was able to help you with everything I wrote in choosing whether or not to train at Elorde Plus - BF Homes. You may visit their  page @ https://www.facebook.com/elordeplus

Gym Review: Elite - Ortigas Emerald

Located right in the heart of Ortigas Center, Elite Boxing and Muay Thai - Ortigas Emerald is one of the newest gyms on the block. To those working near the "networking capital of the Philippines" as I would call it, allow me the honor of testing the waters of this training center.

How to get there - from SM Megamall, it took me about 10 minutes of walk-a-thon to reach the gym. Mind you, Ortigas Center is one of the busiest districts in Metro Manila. Expect a large number of busy people crossing the streets, when walking by. You'll see tons of workers everywhere. The gym is on the 8th floor of Padilla Building right next to Ministop, along F. Ortigas Jr. Road (Emerald Ave). If you're bringing a car, you can park (with pay) on the opposite side of the building at Ruby Road.

The Place

I remember arriving past 4'oclock in the afternoon on a Saturday and I was expecting a crowded gym. This is usually the time of day when the guys workout before they go crazy on a night out with their bro's (or girls).

I got out the elevator and as I was approaching the entrance, I wasn't sure if got the correct place. Usually you would be hearing the incredibly famous Roy Jones Jr's or some Rocky-esque music 50 feet out. But as it turns out, this place was a little too quiet, too serene for a training gym. For Pete's sake I thought I was in a retreat house. As I entered, I was surprised to see a few people. The atmosphere was definitely not the one I was expecting.

Now the good news about Elite - Ortigas Emerald is, it is extremely HUGE! You can absolutely run around the gym, do cartwheels and there's only slight chance you'll bump into another student. There's a massive space on the left hand side with 5 heavy bags where you can also do shadow boxing or circuit training, a large-sized boxing ring in the middle, and another enormous area with 20 heavy bags. It's like SM Megamall's freaking parking lot!

The entire place is kept neat, the flooring looks superb and there's no foul smell coming from their equipment. Everything seems to be in order. If you happen to forget to shower before leaving (just in case), you can use their pretty classy shower rooms. (I used them afterwards and boy I tell you it was intensely refreshing.)

Muay Thai + Circuit Training - 350
The rule of thumb for Muay Thai is Boxing fee + 100. This one is a big check! Get a 20% discount on their 12-session package that's good for 1 month.

The Experience

I wasn't more prepared when I arrived, the sun was shining as bright as a diamond and since it was my "peak" time, I opted for the Muay Thai session. (Good guess!) Now I noticed something I have not seen in any boxing gyms. There's a board where the coaches' photos and their achievements are posted! Isn't that amazing? It's like choosing numbers in an aquarium full of... you guys know what I 'm saying? Kidding aside, this allows you to know your trainer more and to make sure that the ones teaching you are 100% legit.

the Elite boxing (left) & Muay Thai trainers (right)

There were only 2 Muay Thai coaches available at the time. Much to my dismay, one coach is already attending to a student and the other is "still eating", I was told by the lady in the reception. She then tells me to jog and warm up.

But first...

She takes out this piece of paper and hands me what seems to be a Last Will and Testament. "Please sign here", she then mentioned.

"Waiver of Liability" - boldly written on the top portion of the document. It's basically an agreement wherein the gym is released from any accountability including financial responsibility should you get harmed for whatever reason while you are using their facility. Don't sign and they won't allow you to train. Pretty slick, eh? Knowing that I have to pay for my hospital bills in case I sprain my ankle while working out in their gym, I signed the darn paper.

Roughly 10 minutes has past, the trainer introduced himself and I finished jogging.  He immediately instructed me to stretch then showed me the routines. He made me do push ups as the quick stretch was over. Rest. Afterwards, he told me to do 2 rounds of heavy bag work so I can loosen up while watching me like a hawk. The coach was smiling all the time and was generally polite as we did some chit-chats in between the workout.

a student with his Muay Thai coach

Rest. We then went up the ring to hit the pads for 2 rounds. Rest. He walked me to the speed ball area and told me to finish 3 rounds. SPEED BALL? You read my mind there. Now that's unusual.

We rest and capped off the afternoon after another 2 rounds of intense pad work. So many kicks were thrown that day. But in terms of punch/elbow/knee/kick combinations, we did none. An hour out, I still had a few left in my gas tank.

So I did my thing, worked a few more rounds on their bags and out of curiosity, I took a quick glance at the board where the coaches' profiles are posted. I wanted to know more about my trainer and guess what I found out? He's NOT a Muay Thai trainer. His face is listed under "Boxing Coaches". No wonder I was told to do speed ball training.

Value

Let me lay out the facts: I paid for 450 PHP (non-member rate) for Muay Thai + Circuit Training. A "boxing" trainer held the pads for me and I got NO circuit training. So what basically happened? Imagine going to Mcdonald's drive thru: You order a chicken & spaghetti meal and as you open it full of delight on your dining table, you find a freakin'  burger patty! You paid for an apple and were served an orange, that's what happened. I felt tricked and was taken for a fool. Perhaps I was the fool for not looking at the board before engaging with the trainer?

Unfortunately, this is the harsh reality we, students of the game, face everyday. Due to the increasing demand in the full contact sports industry, most gyms are forced to have their boxing trainers teach their students Muay Thai with little to no training themselves. Now I could've made sure that the trainer was an authentic Muay Thai coach by checking the board before I started the workout but I didn't. So guys, I beg you to please learn from my mistake.

The Verdict

As disappointed as I was with the whole experience, I still liked the fact that the gym is neat and huge. All the equipment is kept in place and in excellent condition. All the emotions aside, I give this gym a 4/10.

I hope you guys enjoyed my review of Elite Boxing and Muay Thai - Ortigas Emerald. Stay tuned for my next gym review!

Gym Review: Reyes Gym

When the Philippines has Reyes Barbecue and Reyes Hair Cutters, there's also Reyes Gym. It wouldn't surprise me if I saw a Reyes Vulcanizing Shop, or Reyes Bulalo in some alley in the metro.

entrace at the back via Malinao St

How to get there - the place is located at Domingo M. Guevara St, Mandaluyong. The gym is just a couple blocks across California Garden Square condominium, right in front of Metrobank. You can take a tricycle if you're coming from Boni MRT station. From Shaw MRT station, you have to walk towards Mercury Drug, along Domingo M. Guevara to find a tricycle or simply walk more or less 200 meters to get you warmed up! If all else fails, you can count on Waze.

Reyes gym is actually a fitness center where you have a basketball court, a weight lifting area and a boxing (and Muay Thai) gym, powered by Elorde Boxing, all in one facility. Don't be surprised if you see too many teenage boys who look like Derrick Rose with head bands, they're there to play ball not to spar with you.

If you're bringing a car, you may not expect to find a parking space nearby as there's only about 3 cars that can fit in the parking space in front of the gym. You may try your luck driving to the back entrance and find parking there, although it's usually for those playing basketball. But this wouldn't discourage you from getting skinny fit now, would it?

The Place

All right let's get down to business. What's the first thing I look at when I arrive at any gym? There you go my man - SIZE. Now I find Reyes Gym (Elorde Boxing) to be a tight rectangular box which unfortunately doesn't give you a lot of  room to move around. Although basic warm up routines can be done, it makes it quite difficult for students to do some of the more complex routines especially those involving cones and ropes.

the students and their trainers

BUT, they managed to have a medium-sized boxing ring which is pretty impressive considering the area of the floor. Half of the place is the weight lifting room (the entire gym is owned by the same owners of Elorde Boxing) which is why it looks and feels narrow. Whether you feel like pumping iron or breaking someone's nose (for self-defense), this is the place to be. (Separate fee applies.)

the weight room
Before you sign up with them, please make sure you already have your own gear. Aside from obvious reasons (duh, hygiene!), they don't have boxing gloves or hand wraps for rent. Regarding hydration, there's water and energy drinks that you can buy at the counter.

The equipment are kept in tidy condition all the time, you'll see sanitation and alcohol sprays everywhere. Need a fresh shower after a day of gruesome training? No problem. They have clean and fully functional shower rooms you can use. If there's a long queue (which rarely happens), feel free to sneak in to the shower area designated for basketball folks (you didn't hear it from me, okay?)

Price and Promos

Annual Membership: 1000
They have special 25% discount for students.  This price is within the prevailing market price for most gyms that offer full-contact sports training. It's actually hovering at the lower end of the range.

Cheapest during weekends. Get 25% off with the advance 10 sessions.

Muay Thai: 250

Even sweeter. Grab 20% discount with the advance 10 sessions.

Gym Use: 100 (150 for non-members)
This includes use of the main weight lifting gym with full equipment.

*Tip: it's a lot cheaper on weekends!
*Advance 10 sessions are good for 1 month

The Experience

When you arrive at the gym, the attendant will assign a coach to you. Around 8 coaches were there at the time. To my surprise, the coach that she had for me wasn't a total stranger to me. He is from the same gym where I used to train; it was sudden trip down memory lane. Needless to say, we had a long chit-chat before we got started. This coach saw me break sweat and tears during the time I was preparing for a fight.  Regardless, he still made me "work". And work he made me do.

I was welcomed with circuit training as warm-up. He instructed me to do 3-6 exercises of 3 sets with little to no rest (oh my golly). I also did kettle bell work for 3 sets (work that butt off). Warm up is finished and he comes up to me with, "A student will come for you to spar lightly okay?" Would you say no?

the students doing warm up and basic drills
Now this student walks in and guess what? He's also from the same gym where the coach and I used to train. It's like (name of the gym) all over again! You can pretty much guess what happened next. We did some catching up and certainly had fun while sparring. This isn't the type of sparring where you try to take each other's heads off by the way. We sparred to see to it that our techniques were properly executed, so we can apply what we practice during training in the real world of fighting AKA "study spar".

Tired as I was from the session, my coach forced me to break another leg during the pad work. This was not just a regular boxing session where they make you throw senseless punches just so you can "get fit". He made me throw crisp punches from various angles while moving from different directions. He showed me how to strike the hook properly, told me to always face the opponent when throwing punches and to be in the proper stance at all times. It was textbook boxing.

The pad work lasted for 5 rounds and ended with me feeling like a total beginner to the sport (not to mention tired as hell). I have learned in this gym so much in that short period of time. It was there that I realized that this sport is a never ending learning process. It is noteworthy that the skills the coaches pass on to you come from years of hard work and professional fighting they experienced their whole life.

Value

Muay Thai pad work

The day ended with me having 5% "battery charge" left. I lost track of time. I'd say the whole session took around to 2.5 hours. Badly battered but unbeaten, they offered a quick massage (giggles).

Having been to this gym only once yet feeling like 'home' was a touching and memorable experience for me. The people there were not my friends, I wouldn't consider them as acquaintances either. Most of the coaches there I have never met but as soon as you enter the gym they treat you as their own: their family. This could easily be one of the keystone foundations of an Elorde gym, whether a newbie, amateur or professional, or a veteran student, you are given an unconditional treatment as a student learning the sport.

The Verdict

During my training, I asked myself, "How the hell does this not-so-big of a gym pack so many students?" There were around 12-15 students (including myself) sharing that cute little space they had, I could almost smell that girl's cologne while hitting the bags (it's a flowery kind of scent). Well the answer to that was given away 10 paragraphs ago.

So you probably know by now how I'm very choosy with the gym size right? Plus, the separation of the weight room and the boxing gym, is absolutely unnecessary in my opinion. But I'm not a business-savvy person now, am I? Now the quality of training that I received was phenomenal. Besides that, everyone has been all smiles until I left the place. Without further ado, my rating for Reyes Gym would be an 8/10.

So there you go.  I hope you enjoyed reading another one of my lengthy reviews. See you in my next one!
